Plasma exchange lowered biological-age markers in a small placebo trial

Source: Aging Cell (Buck Institute)

What the study found

In a placebo-controlled study of 42 healthy adults over 50, therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) was generally safe and improved 15 epigenetic clocks compared with placebo. Biweekly TPE plus intravenous immunoglobulin worked best, lowering estimated biological age by an average of about 2.6 years.

Why it matters for healthspan

It is the first multi-omics look at whether removing and replacing plasma shifts aging biomarkers in healthy people. The trial was small, randomized by entry date and single-blinded, measured surrogate markers rather than health outcomes, and was supported by a company whose members include study authors.
